Over the years I
have read a lot of resumes and talked to a lot of
people in the pharma business. It always surprises me
when I hear of people that say “I launched Zoloft” or
any other big drug. You launched? You mean you were
alone and did it all by yourself? Given that 95% of
most pharma organizations are matrix organizations
the statement that “I launched” is not only wrong it
does a discredit to a lot of hard working people who
don’t get to talk about their accomplishments or hard

You go John ! Well
it hasn't taken long for Lilly's new CEO to start
making changes and it's about time. Lilly has started
to eliminate layers of management and a lot of people
are either leaving the company to look for
opportunities elsewhere or are retiring. This of
course is not only happening at Lilly but at other
pharma companies as well as the need for speed and
individual accountability takes root

Environmental
factors can force change. Companies can either
respond to the challenges in the marketplace or
perish and it seems that most pharma companies have
received the message and are responding. In addition
to Merck laying off salespeople Lilly and Pfizer are
both eliminating management layers and in the process
some senior pharma executives are looking for

This past week I was
asked if I liked working at Eli Lilly and although
there are some things that I did not agree with at
Lilly the answer to that questions has to be a
resounding "yes". I was lucky enough to work with
some very talented people at Lilly including a DTC
manager who was extremely talented in marketing and a
Director who had a consumer marketing background.
However, I am passionate about the Internet as a tool
to empower patients and as thus never felt that Lilly
was doing enough to leverage the Web.
