Prescription ED market growing

The prescription market for prescription ED drugs is still growing. For the month ending June 2008 US sales were $165.9 million with Viagra the market leader with $89.6 million followed by Cialis with $52.8 million and Levitra in third place with $23.6 million. Since January 2008 the US ED market has increased +33.3% and since January 2007 the ED market in the US has increased 47.2%.

Cialis and Levitra continue to take share from market leader Viagra. Cialis share has increased 59.6% while Levitra’s share has increased 49.9%. Viagra’s share has increased just 39.7% while the overall market has grown 47.2 since January 2007. Make no mistake about it this is a fight to the finish. Cialis, with its 36 hour message has clear differentiation while Levitra message that it is the ED treatment of choice for men who have ED because of other medical conditions seems to have worked although not enough to overtake Cialis who was third to market.

With Cialis sales over or close to a billion dollars worldwide Lilly’s purchase of Icos for $2.6 billion looks like it was a good move although one has to wonder why Icos would have sold to Lilly for such a low price. At this rate Lilly could rake in well over $10 billion for Cialis before it comes off patent.
