Viagra still on top

It's hard to knock off the market leader when it is so well entrenched and has such a high brand recognition. Viagra is one of the most recognized brands in the world and has been number one for quite since it was introduced to the market. Cialis, the brunt of jokes about 36 hour erections is holding steady at number two with minor gains in share and Levitra seems to be targeting men who have ED as a result of other medical conditions.
Is it possible to overtake Viagra? At this point the answer to that would be "no". They are too well known and entrenched. Pfizer has done a great job bundling the product with other drugs to wholesalers and is spending money on DTC to fight off competitors. The market is growing but very slowly as men enter the ED arena. Cialis is now trying to position itself as the drug that "works fast" in response to Viagra's claims that men want a drug that acts quickly and doesn't have a long half life.
Lilly should be happy enough though with the sales of Cialis. No, it's a blockbuster but I am sure they will take the $500-$700 million in sales the product generates. Levitra may have also found a niche as an ED drug for men with high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
So what's next in the ED wars? Well I saw all three commercials during the football games yesterday. I am sure at some point the DTC dollars will be pulled back unless share starts to drop. The new Cialis site is actually quite funny in that they have actors portraying real stories from couples who are dealing with ED. Actors !? I guess the folks at Lilly think that people who use the Web are that stupid. A shame really....
